Running In The Evening To Burn Fat
I went for a run after work today, I only did a 2 mile run, but I did it quite quickly, in an effort to increase the intensity of the run, and hopefully burn off more fat.
It made me think about how I’ve been training recently, which has been do weights followed by some cardio work in the gym straight after, and how this might be counter productive to gaining muscle and burning fat.
By working out this morning with weights, and then not doing cardio straight after, my body will have been able to recover and all the protein that I ate in my post workout shake and during the day will have been used to repair damaged muscle fibres from weights.
By running in the evening, after work, the body is recovered from the weights, and the protein that I eat after the run can be used to replace any used during the run. This way, I should be able to continue gaining muscle and trim off the fat that I am still carrying.
I’ll be trying this strategy for the next few weeks to see how effective it is at burning off fat. If it works well, I’ll be posting some good progress pics on the site soon!

Hey Tristan-
For fat burning you want to do cardio when there’s no carbs in your system(first think in the morning and after weights) so the calories are coming straight from your fat stores. You might want to try having a half scoop of whey protein to preserve your muscle mass and then doing cardio in the morning followed by weights and cardio at night. Also, keep your workouts under 75 minutes otherwise cortisol starts pumping a tell your body to store fat. Keep up the good progress!

From what I’ve read, if you do exercise when there’s no or little glycogen in the muscles, you just break down the protein in the muscles to release energy.
It depends on your goals I suppose, if you just want to lose weight, and don’t care if that’s muscle or fat, then first thing in the morning will be good. If like me, you want to build muscle and burn fat, it makes sense to do everything one can to preserve the muscle.
There does seem to be a lot of conflicting advice out there, especially in the body building and fitness magazines, which I suppose stems from the fact that they just want to push supplements…

You’re exactly right about the breakdown. That’s why it’s important to have a half scoop of whey protein to preserve your muscle mass if you do prefer cardio first thing in the morning.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why there is a problem in the first place

So you think the problem is carrying the fat in the first place rather than trying to burn it off I should adjust my diet so that I don’t have any fat?
