Training Journal: Saturday 14th February 2009
Just a quick run down the lanes today. Nothing special, just a 4 mile run, actually it’s a bit less than 4 miles, probably 3.6 or 3.7 miles. Total time was 34 minutes, though I did have a walk after about 3 miles as I was breathless. I probably walked for about two minutes, so could have done the run in about 33 maybe 32.5 minutes.
I listened to a medley of Metallica on my iPod whilst running, good music to listen to while working out, but I fear that I am in danger of becoming one of these aging dudes that lives in the past, trying desperately to cling to a mis-spent youth listening to rock music and dreaming of becoming a guitar legend…
If anyone can recommend some other good workout music that is rock / hard rock / metal, I’d be grateful. I don’t really like the “shouty metal” that does seem to be popular these days (Slipknot / Pantera et al), what I want is stuff like Metallica, Offspring, Maiden, Guns’n'roses - even stuff like early Nirvana, Chillis - and definitely stuff like Poison, Motley Crue, early Skid Row, the classic eighties hair metal that was rock music that put you in a good mood!

Hey Tristan-
Have you heard Motley Crue’s Saints Of Los Angeles Track?
Based on your taste I think you might also enjoy these tracks…
Inner Logic by Bad Religion
Show Me How To Live by Audioslave
Would? by Alice in Chains
Guerilla Radio by Rage Against The Machine
I like Giving In by Adema. It’s a bit ’shouty’ as you described but it helps when you’re lifting the heavy stuff. You might wanna give it a whirl.
I also made a list on my blog of 20 workout beats you’ve never heard. You might find something to your liking. Keep up the good workouts!

I haven’t heard of Motley Crue’s Saints of Los Angeles Track, I’ll look into it, any idea what album it was from?
I read your article, it’s interesting that I read about music being good for working out back in 1996 in a (then current) issue of Muscle & Fitness, it seems it’s a popular story to keep rolling out.

Yeah, I think it’s common sense that when you have someone drumming and singing in your ear you’re gonna workout harder. I guess they’re finally pinpointing the reasons why.
The album is also called Saints of Los Angeles. Good Tunes…

I’ve managed to copy a bunch of my old Motley Crue albums and Poison albums onto iTunes now, so at least my music for the next few weeks will be a litte more varied than Metallica :-)
Is “Saints of Los Angeles” a new album?

Gotta love the solo in ‘One’. Amazon says the new Motley Crue came out on June 24, 2008.

Have you heard the new Metallica album - Death Magnetic? Didn’t massively like it at first, but now I’m into it I do. I love the song “All nightmare long”, and “Unforgiven 3″.
The solo in One is good, so is the double bass drumming bit that Lars does.

I’ve seen it but I haven’t heard any songs. I’ll have to check those two out. I don’t have too much Metallica on my fitness shuffle aside from ‘One’ and ‘I Disappear’.
