Body Building Techniques That Work
There are so many different ways to train when lifting weights, and usually they all have their merits. However, if you want to build muscle, then you need to be doing specific body building exercises, or if you will, follow body building techniques that work.
What do I mean by this?
Lifting weights has long been proven to increase your strength or stamina by challenging the muscles and therefore stimulating an increase in the muscle strenght. However, this does not always result in larger muscles, in fact, it may result in smaller muscles initially, and in time result in larger muscles, but only when you’ve significantly increased the strength.
There are many athletes out there that are very strong, but if you were to look at their physique, you would notice that they are actually quite scrawny looking compared to a body builder.
Why is this?
This is because although bigger muscles are generally stronger pound for pound, muscles can still increase in strength without a huge increase in size, and vice versa, you can build big muscles without building huge strength.
When you are body building, you are looking to increase the muscle size, it’s not a strength contest, it’s a size and shape contest.
The best way to train
As such, the best way to train is to follow very strict technique, and do you reps slowly, concentrating on all three elements of the lift, which are, the positive (when you contract), the static (when you hold the contraction) and the negative (when you relax the muscle back to the starting position).
It’s that simple, don’t get obsessed with lifting bigger and bigger each time you workout at the expense of good technique. Don’t think that by doing the reps quicker so that you can complete your set of 10 will mean you’ve had a good workout. Just concentrate on doing slow reps, and do each set to failure if possible. Try and increase the weight (in small increments) each time, or add a few reps to the set each time, one or the other. I guarantee if you follow this method, you will see noticeable results within a few weeks!

Good stuff, Tris. I would say the bread and butter of weight lifting is this: warm up set, light enough to do 15 relatively easily, then a moderately heavy set where you can do 10 with a little resistance, then two heavy sets. Aim for up to 8 in your first set and then up to 6 in your last set. This should ensure you are pushing yourself hard but have properly warmed up. Also, DONT CHEAT! So many people in the gym swing weights up but this does nothing but inflate your ego. Keep the form strict, use less weight, and you will see far more difference than jerking up bigger weights. Using poor form also leads to injuries. Believe me, I know about this as I cheated terribly when I was younger so I could outdo my mates who trained with me. Stupid.

True Dan, the biggest problem people face in body building is overcoming their own egos and making decisions with emotion rather than based on the facts - strangely enough it’s the same problem most people face in all aspects of life.
