Weights advice from a Beast!
No, not me. I don’t qualify for that title yet. I am referring to this huge bloke in the GNC nutrition store near where I work. He clearly knew what he was talking about as he was massive and toned.
Anyway, these are the summaries of what we discussed. More of a general chat over weights and supplements:
Weight loss tips:
He suggested to have no more than 100g of carbs a day if you’re really trying to lose weight. This seemed very low to me but that’s what he said. I think you can have more and lose weight more gradually. But keep up high protein if you’re dieting as you’ll muscle otherwise.
Your six pack abs will only come through diet. Exercise is importance of course but your diet is what will show those abs he said. Intervals are good fat burners.
No creatine when trying to lose weight. You can’t build muscle/size and lose weight at the same time! You can still build strength while you’re dieting though.
Protein
Most important time is in the morning and before bed. Definitely go for casein before bed. He advised against taking your protein with milk as well. Apparently this slows the absorption of the protein into your system. Taking it with water is best as it absorbs very quickly into your muscles - whey is best. Isolate whey even better but more costly. I suggested buying some isolate and to save cost only taking it after a workout when you need it most. Then concentrate more generally.
He also said don’t drink too much milk as our stomachs can’t break a lot of it down very easily. He said a cow has 4 stomachs to do the same thing - I respectfully declined to point out that cows didn’t ‘drink’ milk.
Creatine
Didn’t talk about this much but he said to consider it when bulking up.
Glutamine
He said this is very important as it helps retain, repair and build muscle. Especially so when you’re dieting. It’s nice and cheap too so wallet friendly. I use this and keep meaning to write up an article on it! I will do so soon.
Intervals
Says best to do these after a weight session if they are done at the same time. He said they’d be more effective at fat burning then as your weights workout would use up your glycogen/energy. Have protein afterwards though as your muscles will be wiped out.

Some interesting advice there then.

Definitely. I like his point about abs - to listen to commercials today, you’d think there was some magic pill that magically made them appear. :(

I don’t entirely agree with his point about doing intervals straight after a weights workout, though he is correct in saying that the muscles will have used up their glycogen stores doing the weights. My issue is that, if you do interval training with no muscle glycogen, you’ll burn muscle proteins for fuel as well as fat, as far as I understand it anyway.

Ideally you’d do intervals later or earlier but most people just don’t have the time for that luxury. So afterwards is best and then just a nice big dose of protein to restock your muscles.
