Burn Off The Weekend’s Alco-frolics With A Four Mile Run

26 May 2009 | Random Ramblings

I went out for a few beers over the weekend, actually, it was Cider but what the hell! I was still very drunk by the time the pub chucked us out in the early hours of Sunday morning. The following day, when I woke up I did have a bit of a hangover, if I’m honest, it was the sort of hangover that could have killed a baby elephant! To combat this hangover, I drank lots of water, had a protein shake and some fruit and watched the Grand Prix, which I’m loving this season, it’s so great to see Jenson Button doing well this year after having been in the doldrums for so many seasons. What’s even better is seeing the smirk wiped off Lewis Hamilton’s face, and watching him slowly sink into what could become a depressed state. It just goes to confirm my suspicions that really it’s the car that matters and the driver is, ironically enough, just a passenger in F1! I’m getting off my point somewhat here, so I will get back to it - hangovers, and how to get rid of them, and the guilt that goes along with having drunk excessively the previous night - running! I know the thought of going for a run when you’ve got a hangover probably frightens most people, I can say with conviction that it is the best way to get rid of them. Clearly you need to re-hydrate yourself after a big night on the tiles, but once you’ve done that, going for a run will clear your hangover and make you feel much better about yourself, most importantly, it will get rid of the guilt that builds up from having drunk a lot. My understanding of alcohol and exercise can be distilled thusly. Alcohol will make you very happy when you’re drunk, but one can tend to get a bit down in the dumps with a hangover, it’s a well know depressant. To combat this, doing intense physical exercise will release endorphins into your brain, which will combat the effects of the alcohol and so stabilise your mood. Not least, going for a four mile run will burn off about 400 calories during the exercise and the increased metabolism throughout the rest of the day should go some way to negating the build up of fat from having a few pints.

I agree this is a good thing to do and usually helps. It’s probably about getting your system going again and sweating out the bad stuff. However, if you’re ‘too’ hungover then I’ve found it can make you feel worse. But for low-medium hangovers it’s great. I’ll be hungover on Sunday after a big night out so maybe I’ll put it to the test and report back here.
