Interval Training Is Great!
I’ve also been doing some interval training lately after reading up on how effective it is at burning fat and raising cardiovascular fitness. I’ll write about my findings in more detail soon but they generally tally with Tristan’s research. I’m looking forward to his imminent free E-Book!
I copied Tristan’s recent sprint training yesterday and it is TOUGH! I have been doing interval training in the gym on treadmills and cross trainers and as hard as these can be you can’t quite go flat out as they take time to speed up and so the intense periods last around 30-45 seconds. Still very good but a slightly different version of interval training (variety is good though).
So yesterday I went up the local park and did a 6 minute slow jog. Then I ran like a lion was chasing me for 15 seconds, 60 secs jog x 3, 15 sec sprint with 75 sec jog x 2 and for my final oneĀ a 90 sec jog and final 15 sec sprint. By that point I was creamed and called it a day as I didn’t want to risk pulling something. It took me ages to stop sweating after what was just 90 seconds of hard exercise. Good stuff. Feels much more satisfying a workout than a plodding 40 minute run. So I will add some outdoor sprint intervals to my indoor ones now. Tomorrow I’ll be doing 30-60 high intensity intervals on the cross trainer for a change.
Anyway, I’m writing too much. I’ll be back on here soon with my understanding of the wonderful form of exercise that is interval training :-)

I too am a fan of this method of training. Next time your in the gym maybe try the rowing machine with interval training. I’ve gone for 400m slow (ish) followed by 100m all out sprint, for a total of 3000m. Killer :S I mean :)

I love interval training, seems to get me fitter much quicker than steady state cardio, and all the reading I’ve done about it, it’s much better for fat burning too!
I’ve never really been that into the rowing machine, but I’ll give it a go next time I’m down the gym, probably later this afternoon.

I’ve been mixing interval training in with my workouts for over a year now, and yeah, it’s awesome for trimming up and burning calories. Way more efficient than just a steady cardio pace, and less boring too!
You can try it on the bike at the gym as well. I go 30 seconds pedaling like crazy, and then 2-3 minutes at about half that speed. I am so beat by the time I’m done!
Thanks for sharing your experience!

I think that spinning classes are so popular because they are just a really good mixed intensity interval training session, and unlike other types of interval training, it’s quite sociable with all the various people doing the exercise together.
