Sprint Interval Training 21st May

21 May 2009 | Interval Training

Got up this morning and went for sprint interval training before breakfast. Well, actually, I had a protein shake and a banana before my run, watched an episode of Scrubs (my favourite!) while I was waiting for my shake and banana to go down and then went down the lanes before 8 am.

Where I run is down the farmers lanes down the Somerset levels, it’s idyllic, lovely country scenery, with a nice back drop of the Mendip hills in the background and the Quantocks in the distance to the West. There is a one mile stretch of road, appropriately titled “the long drove” which I use for my sprint interval training.

Being that it’s a mile long, I run to the end, then run back, thus achieving two miles of sprint interval training. This usually takes about 15 minutes or so, much quicker than if I were to jog two miles, but that’s because I do about ten, 15 second sprints. Each sprint probably gets me between 80 metres, maybe 100 in the first few that I do, when I’m fresh.

When I was younger, I could do the 100m sprint in about 13 seconds, now I’m nearly 30, my times seem to have dropped off somewhat! I guess with a bit more training and shedding a bit of the extra flab I’m carrying now I could get down to a reasonable time, but Usain Bolt I am not!

Today I managed to run the whole two miles without having to stop and walk, so I did each sprint interval of 15 seconds, followed by 60 seconds of jogging all the way for the whole two miles. This is the first time I’ve done this and I felt really pleased with myself for doing it. It feels like progress compared to the first week when I had to walk the recovery intervals after three or four sprints!

Well done, mate. Seeing progress is what it’s all about! What’s your next goal with that then? - increasing the intervals to 20 seconds?

I’ll probably just do this a few more times just to consolidate the gains, then look to add an extra half mile to it. I think I’d be ruined if I tried to sprint for 20 seconds!
