For anyone who’s familiar with mixed martial arts, it’s impossible to ignore the tip-top, if not perfect, form of MMA fighters. Just like in any physical activity, these bodies weren’t made over night. In fact, it takes months and years of rigorous workouts for most fighters to build up their bodies to take on the physical nature of the sport. Yet, the proper conditioning which utilizes proper MMA training equipment can help even the most average person train like the best MMA fighters.

Most MMA fighters train their entire body during each workout session. The training exercises focus on developing strength and stamina while simultaneously challenging the mental toughness of the fighter. Therefore, common MMA workout routines usually involve different stations that mix in cardio sprints, bench dips, multiple sets of jumping jacks, and weighted pull-ups. Ultimately, these types of exercises will help them develop the proper physical and mental fitness to get in the ring and fight while enduring repetitive physical pain.

As most athletes are aware, you don’t have to be in a real match to get injured. The same precautions taken during an actual match should be applied during a training routine to reduce the risk of injury. A proper workout routine should involve the use of quality MMA gear, such as MMA training gloves, which help cut down on the force that is put on the hands - a major stress area where impact is inevitable and risk of injury is high. By using the right equipment and protecting the body from possible injuries, the intensity of the MMA workout can make an average person look and feel like an MMA fighter.

I’ve recently purchased a 2.25kg tub of Dymatize Elite Whey Protein from my favourite supplements website, DiscountSupplementsGuide.com. I’ve always wanted to try the Dymatize protein shakes because they promote their brand as being a superior product, and as such I figured they protein shake would be better quality than some of the other brands I’ve used, such as My Protein and Holland & Barrett’s Body Fortress.

When the tub arrived it looked really good, the packaging is of a different standard to other protein products I’ve used. The lid is clearly custom made for Dymatize as it has the branding embossed onto it - that must be expensive in itself!

The picture of what the shake looks like on the side of the tub is really appetising, it looks really thick and creamy, just like a shake in a restaurant or diner. When I opened the lid, the smell that came out was quite nice, chocolate, but washed out if you see what I mean.

I made my first shake today, as I normally do at breakfast, I put in a banana and 2/3rds of a pint of milk, semi skimmed. I blend this up for about a minute, until it’s all blended together nicely. The end result was a very creamy tasting, but a bit thin, with a real great chocolate taste to it. There was no bitter aftertaste as you can sometimes get with artificial sweeteners, the shake went down very well. I would mark this 8/10!

After two weeks of using these Acai Burn pills I took my body fat reading again today and it was 26.9% - up from the previous week! My weight hasn’t altered significantly enough to see any difference, so I think it’s fair to say that in the week since I last measured my weight and bodyfat, not a lot has changed.

I thought these pills were going to have me shredded in four weeks, just like the advert said, I can’t believe that they are not working…it’s really weird, surely everything people say in adverts is true, right? Clearly I’m being hugely sarcastic here, though I will concede that I have had a cold this last week so haven’t done much strenous exercise, just a few miles walking everyday to keep the body ticking over.

Perhaps if I had been doing regular weights and interval training the fat would have fallen off, but then how would I know that was the effect of the pills or simply the effect of the exercise? What a conundrum!

I have been using Optimum Health Ultimate Creatine for the past three few months now. I really should have reviewed it when I first got it, but in fairness to creatine, it’s not like a protein powder, it’s only really after you’ve used it that you have anything to review!

Generally I’ve found it to be a good creatine monohydrate powder. I’ve had the same results as with other creatine monohydrate powders, i.e. increase in strength/size etc. What makes Optimum Health Ultimate Creatine different is the value for money - it is generally the cheapest creatine I’ve been able to find delivered.

I had used My Protein’s creatine monohydrate before, but as that costs £7.95 + £3.95 P&P total £11.90 for the same amount - 500 grams, I found that Optimum Health Ultimate Creatine was the best value I could find at £8.99 delivered. I think the cheapest place that I found that stocked it was SuperFit.co.uk via DiscountSupplementsGuide.com

I started my 1 month trial of Acai burn last week, so this is the end of one week’s use and I have to say that I can’t really see much difference. However, I have been on the scales and I haven’t gained any weight, but do seem to have lost a pound or so.

I just measured my bodyfat and I can see that it is down by 0.2% from 26.9% last week to 26.7% this week. I can’t really see that this is a significant enough difference to say it is definitely down to the Acai Burn pills I’ve been taking. One thing I would say though, I haven’t done any real exercise since last Friday and I went out for a lads night out Friday night so would have piled on the calories then. The reason I’ve not done any exercise is because I’ve come down with a cold this week, so bar a couple of short walks to get some fresh air, I’ve not done any exercise.

I feel like my cold is clearing up, so hopefully next week I can get back to some vigorous exercise and see if I can’t drop some significant bodyfat in a week and prove that these pills are worthwhile.

I received a free one month trial for Acai Burn yesterday, and figured that seeing there is so much hype about this stuff on the internet, I would give it a go and see if it lives up to the hype. To do this, I will continue eating my normal diet and training as usual. I have weighed myself before starting and also taken my body fat percentage.

My current weight is 84kg with a body fat percentage of 26.9%. That was taken this morning, so I will do the same next Thursday and each subsequent week until the 30 days worth of pills are finished.

I should also take some before and after photos but right now I need to get on with some work, so maybe I’ll take some tonight!

I’ve been tempted to try some PhD Nutrition Pharma Whey since I tried their Diet Whey product a few months back, the reason being - it tasted really good!

Before I do buy this product, I wanted to see whether it had any micellar casein in it, as I’ve been using Boditronics Express Whey this month, and while it is a great tasting and mixing shake, it does seem to give me phlegm, which I assume is the casein as it never happened when I used just whey protein concentrate.

Looking at the PhD Nutrition website, according to the nutritional information about Pharm Whey there is only whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate, so no casein - good start!

In addition to the great whey protein that it contains, it also has added Branch Chain Amino Acids and L-Glutamine which will help with anti-catabolism and general muscle building.

The other benefit that it has over other whey protein powders is the addition of pre-biotics, which help with digestion and maintaining healthy levels of bacteria in the digestive system.

The powder is 80% protein, 6.58% sugars, 6.4% fat, with the rest being made up of non-sugar carbs, fibre and amino acids.

So a 50gram portion will provide:

160 calories from protein

13 calories from sugars

29 calories from fats

total calories 202

impact calories 13

The fact that there is fat in the shake rather than lots of simple carbs is a good thing as far as I’m concerned - I’d much prefer to have low-GI fat energy than high-GI sugar energy in my food.

The glycemic load of this serving would be a measly 3.29.

One such request that caught my eye was from a website that is running a competition to find the best home based exercise for a full body workout.

They are running a competition that will payout a generous cash prize to the winning fitness fanatic who comes up with the best exercise. To read more about it, please take a look at their website Home Fitness 2010.

It’s a road that many have tried to take and failed because they did not know how to stay on it. Some start out with good intentions only to fall by the wayside because they are not dedicated to the task. And it is only a handful who make it because they know what it really takes to traverse the road to fitness and come out on top. Why is it easy for some of us to stay fit and healthy all our lives while others feel it is a constant struggle? The answer is simple – fitness is a combination of exercise and diet, and when you know the keys to unlocking the secrets to both these factors, you become fit and strong.
Being slim does not automatically equate to being fit. In fact, some slim people are out of breath after walking just a short distance. When you’re fit, your energy levels and stamina are high and you can do any activity with relative ease. While regular exercise (which includes the right combination of cardio workouts and strength training) gets you fighting fit, there are certain foods that complement your efforts in the gym and enhance your fitness.

Fun Fruits: The next time you’re in the mood for something sweet, reach out for that banana or a slice of fresh pineapple instead of the ice cream tub in the freezer and watch your energy soar. Fruits are nature’s way of rejuvenating your body and replenishing vital nutrients that you lose when you expend calories. Bananas are a rich source of potassium and fiber and they prevent your muscles from cramping due to dehydration during or after an intense workout. Once you finish your workout, you could eat some papaya and pineapple because the enzymes in these fruits help muscles recover after the strain they’ve been subjected to. And if you want strong and healthy bones, add some grapes to your daily diet as well.

Nutritious Nuts: They may be loaded with calories, but they’re good for you all the same. Almonds and walnuts boost your brain power and are rich in protein and fiber, both of which help improve your muscle mass. Their monounsaturated fat content provides various health benefits including improved memory and concentration. When you add a handful of dried fruits to your nuts, you have an unbeatable combination. They’re low in fat, good sources of iron, and make great pre-workout snacks because they’re light on the stomach and excellent stores of energy.

Cool Caffeine: That cup of coffee you drink may be really good for you depending on the time you drink it – caffeine has been known to help muscles recover after an intense workout and also reduce soreness and pain. It acts by blocking a chemical that activates the pain receptors in our body. Similarly, green tea is rich in antioxidants and prevents cell damage caused by resistance to exercise. A few cups after your exercise will expedite your recovery process.

Just as we begin to crawl before we walk and learn the alphabet before we read, the same applies to getting in shape. Beginning a fitness program in the correct manner can be the determining factor in the success of our program. Starting out slowly while our bodies build strength and endurance is the correct approach. Though we all want results immediately, this is one program in life where slow and steady truly wins the race.

There are many weight loss programs (Lindora) available and the successful ones encourage people to follow a solid fitness program in addition to their focus on lower caloric intake. For many, weight loss is the easiest part of getting healthy and fit. The ongoing exercise and food maintenance is where the real challenge is found. People who lose weight, exercise, and keep the weight off long term are much more successful in comparison to those who don’t exercise. To truly win the battle of the bulge, a fitness plan is the best strategic defense.
Begin with a realistic approach to your fitness goal.

The amount of time you are able to commit to exercise on a weekly basis is important in knowing where to start. Committing to a half an hour every day, or even every other day is a good start. Having some basic tools and equipment is also very important. Many are able to work out in a gym where equipment and trainers are provided; however, if you don’t have the luxury of a gym membership, there is a vast variety of workout aids available on the market. A few lightweight dumbbells or stretch tube exercise bands are two low cost items that will assist you in a good start to your fitness plan. Starting out slow and with lower weight dumbbells will allow your body to build muscle mass and greatly reduce the chance of injury. There is always time to get stronger, more fit, and leaner. Patience is the key to keeping free of injuries.

Stretch tube exercise bands are used for muscle stretches and exercises. In addition to being low cost, they offer different resistance levels and help to improve range of motion as well as strength. Working many parts of the body, exercise bands help to build bone density which is very important in women as their body’s age and bones become more frail. Resistance exercises are used in rehabilitation as well as conditioning and training.

Begin slowly, identify your fitness goals, have a few tools in place, and the next step is to get into a regular routine of exercising. If you are a morning person take advantage of your morning energy level and work out during that time. Many people are more productive at night and later in the day is a better time to complete their fitness workout. Motivation is a powerful tool in keeping committed to your weight loss goal. Finding a workout buddy and being accountable to someone else often times helps to keep your commitment alive. It is important to remember to use the right form and correct posture when exercising. Focusing on each and every move will help to ensure a workout free of injuries.
