Weight Training Exercises

There are a few different reasons for doing weights, ranging from a need to be stronger to make you better at whatever sport you play, more commonly, out of a need to improve your self esteem, or for many older people, weights (resistance) training is used to combat the effects of muscle atrophy and diseases, such as parkinsons.

Benefits of weight training

  • Increase strength and stamina in the muscles
  • Increase the resting metabolic rate, which aids weight loss
  • Relieve stress through the release of endomorphins
  • Improve self confidence and self belief

Types of weight training

  • Bodybuilding - the goal is to increase the size of your muscles
  • Powerlifting - the goal is to increase the size of the weight you can lift (increase your strength)
  • Toning - the goal is to help tone (firm up) the muscles for asthetic reasons
  • General fitness - the goal is to increase the stamina in the muscles
