Crunches

There are a few ways you can do crunches, either with just your body weight, by lying on the floor or by using a crunch machine in your gym (assuming it has one).

To do crunches without any equipment, lie on the floor with your knees bent up and your feet flat on the floor. Keeping your neck straight, and your hands touching your temples, tense the upper part of your stomach, so that your upper back lifts off the floor slightly. You should feel this tensing your upper abs (the top of the six pack).

Unlike a sit up, this exercise is for the upper abs, and doesn’t require you to lift your back off the floor. To make it harder, you may hold a fitness ball or weight behind your head.

If your gym has a crunch machine, make sure you load up enough weight on it to at least equal your upper body and head’s weight, otherwise you are making the exercise easier than just doing it with your body weight.
