Back exercises

The back isn’t a single muscle, it’s a group of muscles that together form a large part of the muscles on the upper body, stretching from the trapezius at the base of the neck and across to the shoulders, down the flanks with the latissimus dorsi (lats) down to the base of the spine. There are also a myriad of smaller muscles that are responsible for stability between each vertabrae of the spine and controlling the movement of the spine as well.

The most important muscles for body builders are the traps and the lats. Though they are often an overlooked muscle group, as many wannabe body builders focus on the visible muscles, like the chest, shoulders and biceps, the back muscles are very important in creating a full looking torso and adding width to a persons upper body.

There are many different exercises that can be done to exercise the back muscles, each one hitting slightly different areas of the back. Almost all back exercises will hit the biceps on a secondary level, so it’s usually a good idea not to train biceps the day before a back workout, with many preferring to train biceps the same day as they train the back.
