Bent over barbell rowing

Allegedly this is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s favourite exercise. It’s a good compound exercise for the back, it uses the biceps and the core muscles to stabilise your body while performing the exercise. It’s advisable if you are going to be using a heavy bar to use a weight training belt, and so avoid any injuries.

Stand with your feet at least shoulder width apart, maybe slightly wider, they should be level with each other, neither foot should be in front of the other. Bend at the waist, so that your back is parallel with the floor. Reach down with your hands and pick up the barbell just wider than shoulder width apart. Pull the bar into the bottom of your chest, top of your stomach area. Hold the bar at the top of the rep, then slowly lower. Breathe in when you lift the bar, and breathe out when you lower the bar.

Don’t go too heavy too quickly with this exercise as you are putting strain on your lower back, even with a weights training belt on. Also, don’t perform this exercise quickly as it can cause injuries in the shoulder and back which you want to avoid.
