Chest exercises
The chest muscles are also known as the pectoral muscles. When you exercise the chest muscles, you usually also exercise, albeit secondarilly, the shoulders and / or the triceps. A good chest routine will involve all three to some degree, so it’s a good body part to workout because it is what’s known as a compound exercise.
The chest muscles spread all the way down the sternum (breastbone) and attach to the arm near the armpit. Although it is just one muscle, in body building terms, the chest is thought of as being three distinct muscles, the upper chest, the middle chest and the lower chest, all of which require slightly different exercises to isolate the muscle fibres.
The guide on bench press has an explanation of how you can target each of the separate chest muscles, though this logic can also be applied to the dumbbell flyes.
